Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Rogers, Keith Churchill (1896 - 1978)Born on 26 April 1896 at Buln Buln, Victoria, Australia; died on 7 April 1978 in Bairnsdale, Victoria.
He died last just
before his 82nd birthday.
He had lived
at Black Mountain Wulgulmerang since he
was 7, and knew every mountain and valley
and meadow and its flora and had a named
collection of the plants of the whole district.
He had enlisted as a stretcher-bearer in the 1914-18 war and served from 19 June 1916 to 26 April 1919.
He served his own district in many ways and
representing it for 30 years on the Tambo
Shire Council.
He was a long-standing member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria (FNCV) which he joined in
1953. He was also a valued member of the
Bairnsdale and Latrobe Valley clubs, and
attended many Bairnsdale meetings
although he had to travel 90 miles each way
to do so.
During the years 1965-77 he
missed only one of the alpine campouts held
each January by the two clubs, and on that
one occasion "his unobtrusive but ever-helpful presence was missed very much".
He wrote 'Across mountain and plain : writings of an East Gippsland field naturalist' published by the
Bairnsdale Field Naturalists Club in 1980.
Helichyrsum rogersianum was
named in his honour by Dr. Willis
(Muelleria Vol. 1, No, 3),
it is now known as Ozothamnus rogersianus (J.H.Willis) Anderb.
