Porter, Donald Alexander (c.1849 - 1927)
Born c.1849 at Tamworth, NSW; died c.28 December 1927, at Bankstown, late of Tamworth, NSW.
The Manning River Times and Advocate newspaper published an obituary on 8 February 1928:
MR. DONALD ALEXANDER
PORTER.
The death took place at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Foster,
"Highbury," Hunter Street, Bankstown of Mr. Donald Alexander Porter, late of Tamworth (N.S.W.), at
the age of 78 years.
Deceased was
born at St. Luke's Vicarage, West
Tamworth, where his father, Mr. W.
H. Boys Porter, was Vicar and Principal of Boy's Grammar School.
He
resided in Tamworth for many years
and held the position of Inspector
of Government Schools and Residences in the Northern District.
He
was highly respected and was of a
very generous disposition. He was
also possessed of wonderful knowledge in general and was a member
of the Royal Society of N.S.W., hav
ing written several works; one in particular dealing with mineralogy.
Be
ing a great authority on mineralogy
and geology his knowledge was invaluable to those seeking such in
formation.
He placed a very fine collection of minerals and precious
stones within the Australian Museum,
Sydney.
He leaves a wife, seven
daughters and one sister (Mrs.
Lund) to mourn their sad loss, his
oldest daughter (Bella) having pre-deceased him about five months ago.
The cortege was a lengthy one and
the interment took place in the
Church of England portion of Rookwood cemetery.
Alex George notes: He collected for Mueller in 1884 near Silverton, Wilcannia and Port Jackson. Collected bryophytes, fungi freshwater algae and also fossil plants.
