Meredith, Lyn Davies (1940 - 2026)
Born on 4 March 1940 in Lancashire, UK; died on 12 August 2026 in Canberra, ACT.
Lyn migrated from the UK to Australia.
He was working for Norwood Park Crematorium before joining the staff of the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) in the early 1980s.
He is listed as 'Planting assistant'in the 1984-85 ANBG Annual Report.
By 1990-91 he is listed as 'Assistant Planting Officer', assisting Geoff Buttler with choice and suitable positioning of new plantings within the Botanic Gardens.
The 1987-88 ANBG Annual Report states:
"A project, funded by the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service (ANPWS), to survey rare or threatened Australian plants in cultivation was completed in November 1987. Project Officer, Lyn Meredith, surveyed the collections of 24 gardens and arboreta, including all major botanic gardens. Of the 3388 species of Australian plants considered to be rare or threatened, 1053 were found to be in cultivation.
By May 1997 he is working for the Australian National Parks & Wildlife Service (ANPWS) - which managed the ANBG - in the Threatened Species and Communities Section, based at Belconnen.
An entry in 'HerbNews' No.3 states:
"As foreshadowed in the last HerbNews, Lyn Meredith has commenced work at the Centre (CSIRO site). Lyn continues to be part of the Environment Australia Biodiversity Group's Threatened Species and Communities Section (TSCS formerly the Endangered Species Unit) and retains responsibility for a number of endangered species recovery plans. He has been posted to the Centre to strengthen the cooperation between us and TSCS. His work at the Centre involves coordinating the National Threatened Plants Database, which incorporates information necessary for the production of what was Rare or Threatened Australian Plants (ROTAP), the ANZECC Threatened Australian Plants List, and the plant Schedules to the Endangered Species Protection Act. Lyn is always interested to hear of any recent assessments of rare or threatened Australian plant species. He is usually to be found in Room 2.3 1, in the 'old' wing of the Herbarium building on the CSIRO site.
Lyn undertook some field-work collecting with Mark Richardson, and together with Mark helped establish the Australian Network for Plant Conservation (ANPC).
He attended an presented a poster at the IUCN Conference in Reunion, Canary Islands, 1989 on behalf of the ANBG.
