Born in 1936, presumably in South Africa.
Graduated (Ph.D.) in 1960 from the University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, after working on certain aspects off the ecology,
anatomy and physiology of the perennial grass, Eragrostis curvala.
Dr Leigh later studied the
signifcance of plants and grazing animals in the nitrogen cycle of sown pastures at the
Graslands Research Institute at Hurley, England, UK.
In 1961 he joined the staf of the CSIRO
Riverina Laboralory, Deniliquin, NSW, where his main interest was the ecology of
a number of semi-arid woodland, shrub-steppe and grassland communities. Particular interest
was centred on diet selection by sheep and the effects of graizing on plant specles.
Between
1967-69 he was Officer-in-Charge of the CSIRO Riverina Laboratory.
He then became a Principal Research Scientist in the Ecology Section of the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry, Canberra.
He published a number of
papers in international journals.
In 1965 he was a co-author of 'Pastoral Plants of the Riverine
Plains', in 1981 he wa a co-author of 'Plants of Western New South Wales' and in 1984 a co-author of 'Extinct and Endangered Plants of Australia'.
