Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Krauss, Siegfried L. (Siegy) (fl. 1990s-2020s)Completed a PhD at University of Woolongong in 1994 with a thesis titled "Systematic pattern and evolutionary process in the complex species Persoonia mollis R.BR. (Proteaceae)".
Worked at the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney in the 1990s.
He joined Kings Park, Perth, WA, as a conservation geneticist in 1998.
As leader of the
Conservation Genetics team, he pursued a range of research interests, investigating evolutionary processes including mating, pollen and seed dispersal, and the assessment of spatial genetic structure and variation within
specimens.
With a strong focus on practical conservation and ecological restoration, his research extends to the assessment of clonality and genetic erosion,
especially as it relates to threatened species recovery.
He has made a major applied research contribution in the delineation of local provenance seed
collection zones for ecological restoration. The application of genetic tools
including DNA fingerprinting and DNA sequencing to improved success in native plant
breeding programs has also been investigated.
Krauss and his many postgraduate
students have published numerous research papers while at Kings Park.
He is honoured in the name Leptocarpus kraussii B.G.Briggs (2014) Restionaceae.
[Earlier as Meeboldina 'kraussii' B.G.Briggs & L.A.S.Johnson (1999).]
